A is for “Action”: Blogging Challenge Begins!

Hello, dear readers.

Between work and life in general, I haven’t been blogging very much. Actually, I haven’t been blogging at all for the last several months. So when I came across this “Blogging A to Z” campaign the other day, it inspired me to start writing again.

I’m going to attempt to write more posts over the next month, no matter how short. I can’t promise that I’ll post every day…but I’m sure going to try.

So, today, in honor of the letter “A,” I’m talking about action.

Particularly, Moms Demand Action, and why I’ve decided to join this organization to help combat gun violence in America.

If you follow my blog, you know I’ve posted about gun violence before. It’s been three years since I wrote this post, following a mass shooting in Oregon. Since then, there have been dozens of shootings at schools and on college campuses in our country, not to mention the 13,000 gun homicides that occur in this country every single year. On an average day, seven children are killed by gun violence.  Seven.

After the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut, Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts created a Facebook page as a place for moms and other Americans to come together to organize and brainstorm solutions to the gun violence crisis. Nearly 5 years later, in conjunction with Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action has more than 4 million supporters and a chapter in every state!

The goal of Moms Demand Action is to educate, organize, recruit, inform, call people to action and highlight local volunteer opportunities. Moms Demand Action volunteers are diverse, persistent–and everywhere.

Over the past five years, Moms Demand Action volunteers have pushed back against the gun lobby and fought for common-sense laws and policies to make our country safer. They’ve fought hard and continue to fight to keep guns out of the wrong hands, such as those with criminal backgrounds, domestic abusers and people with dangerous mental illnesses—the same sensible gun laws that the majority of Americans would like to see enacted.

They’ve worked tirelessly both in front of and behind the scenes, and I am proud to be joining the cause.

If you’re like me and are tired of feeling hopeless and helpless about gun violence in this country, it’s time to take action. Join the millions of volunteers who are fighting for sensible gun laws to protect our children and families!
