Want to Know What Type of Mom I Am? Read This.

A few weeks ago, I posted a mini-rant on Facebook about how tired I am of all of the “5 types of moms you’ll see at the playground” and “10 types of moms to avoid” posts crawling through my newsfeed. I get that they’re supposed to be light-hearted and fun, but in my opinion, all they do is add more fuel to the “mommy war” fire. When I was a kid, it seemed that moms and dads were just…moms and dads. I don’t remember my mom or her friends labeling other moms as helicopter moms, soccer moms, tiger moms, and what else have you. Of course, I was probably preoccupied with my burgeoning Strawberry Shortcake doll collection at the time, but still.

In my humble opinion, labeling other parents (or anyone else on God’s green earth, for that matter) has only one single, solitary purpose: to put those we disagree with into a neat and tidy box so that we can feel better about judging them.

Want to know what type of mom I am? Here you go.

I’m the type of mom who loves her kid, no matter what.

I’m the type of mom who is trying to do what’s best for her family.

I’m the type of mom who is teaching her kid to be polite and respectful of other people’s time, possessions and opinions so that she doesn’t grow up to be a judgmental a-hole.

I’m the type of mom who values education and who wants to teach her child to think for herself.

I’m the type of mom who thinks that screen time should be very, very limited.

I’m the type of mom who believes that 10-year-olds shouldn’t own cell phones with unlimited data plans.

I’m the type of mom who thinks that kids should have a decent bedtime.

I’m the type of mom who reads to her kid every night.

I’m the type of mom who hugs her child probably more than she should.

I’m the type of mom who has high expectations.

I’m the type of mom who enjoys playing with her daughter.

I’m the type of mom who does not enjoy doing housework.

I’m the type of mom who worries. A lot.

I’m the type of mom who goes to church.

I’m the type of mom who doesn’t want a gun in the house.

I’m the type of mom who thinks that children should be exposed to the arts and learn to appreciate that there’s more to life than Disney music.

I’m the type of mom who thinks that children should learn to play an instrument.

I’m the type of mom who thinks that a healthy diet is essential to healthy development.

Consequently, I’m the type of mom who buys organic foods and limits sugary snacks.

I’m the type of mom who cooks and bakes from scratch, and lets her daughter help.

I’m the type of mom who thinks kids should be outside getting dirty whenever possible.

I’m the type of mom who’s teaching her daughter to grow things. In dirt. Outside.

I’m the type of mom who does not underestimate the value of a good stain remover.

I’m the type of mom who says, “No, you can’t.”

I’m the type of mom who says, “Yes, you can.”

I’m the type of mom who’s teaching her daughter about the importance of protecting our planet.

I’m the type of mom who volunteers.

I’m the type of mom who votes.

And finally, if you ever hurt my kid in any way, you’ll learn exactly what type of mom I am.
